18.7 Geothermal Education There are presently no specific courses and degrees at Norwegian universities and technical high schools related to geothermal energy. However, one should bear in mind that Norway is one of the leading actors world-wide in high education related to hydrocarbon industry with topics including: exploration, reservoir, geochemistry, transport, heat flow and modelling. Students who have attended such courses are well equipped to tackle the challenges given by geothermal industry. However, the Norwegian educational establishment is ready to prepare more specifically tuned courses to geothermal subjects provided that the government gives green light to such move which includes funding. Despite its very limited economic resources, ―Norwegian Centre for Geothermal Energy Research‖ (CGER) is trying to disseminate geothermal knowledge amongst its participants. It organizes annual gatherings for its members where they have the opportunity to present their latest activities related to geothermal research. In 2011, CGER is planning to hold its first national conference on geothermal energy in Norway entitled ―GeoEnergi 2011‖ in Bergen, where the Norwegian geothermal community is presenting their recent results and visions for the future. Distinguished international speakers are invited to give keynote lectures and it is expected that Norwegian authorities at ministry level and the Norwegian press will attend the venue in order to disseminate geothermal knowhow amongst governmental officials and the public. CGER is also offering for its members mini-workshops on topics which are relevant to geothermal energy. The workshops (lasting one day) are run by those members of CGER who are specialists in the field. The following workshops were run in 2010:  Workshop on micro-seismicity organized by NORSAR  Workshop on tracers, corrosion and scale organized by IFE  Workshop on drilling is planned by IRIS in 2011 The management committee of CGER is doing its best in inviting leading personalities in the geothermal community to give seminars to CGER members on their work and views. Amongst the distinguished speakers have been Professor Jefferson Tester (USA) and Dr. Barry Goldstein (Australia). 18.8 International Cooperative Activities  NORSAR and Statoil take part in EU FP7 project GEISER dealing with induced micro- seismicity  Statoil takes part in the Iceland Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) which is a long term study of high-temperature hydrothermal systems in Iceland  IFE is a GIA Task leader of Task of Annex III- Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and will run a workshop in 2012 for IEA-GIA participants on Tracer Technology, Corrosion and Scaling  Norway actively takes part in Annex VII- Advanced Geothermal Drilling Techniques, where Norwegian projects on drilling have been briefly presented. More extensive presentations are planned for the future.  Norway has joined ETP-RHC (European Technology Platform- Renewable Heating and Cooling) with several members. Norway also has one representative in the steering committee. The activity is funded by RCN. 207
