The aim of Statoil is to build upon its core expertise from oil and gas, such as geology, drilling and reservoir management, in order to realise the full potential of geothermal power in markets where the company already has a presence. In cooperation with some of the most experienced developers in the world, Statoil participates in the Iceland Deep Drilling Project, IDDP, in Iceland, exploring present and next generation geothermal technologies. By building on its extensive petroleum competence, Statoil can be a driving force behind the technological and engineering solutions for this clean renewable energy source. 18.6 Research Activities 18.6.1 Focusareas The research in geothermal energy in Norway is presently on a very low level in comparison with other renewable energy activities such as wind, solar, bio, etc. This is primarily due to the fact that Norway has abundant sources of energy and deep geothermal energy is relatively new concept for Norwegian authorities who often argue that a small country such as Norway cannot focus on everything. However, the arguments that a transfer of technology from highly developed hydrocarbon activities in the North Sea to the geothermal industry could profit Norwegian enterprise have been the first important signal to politicians who have started to realize the potential which Norway possesses in the area of geothermal both in Norway and overseas. The first major research projects to be funded by Norwegian funding agency RCN in geothermal are focused primarily on drilling technology and numerical simulations, where Norway is a well established authority. 18.6.2 Government Funded The following projects are presently funded by RCN: Game Changing Drilling Technology (Norhard AS and Georigg AS) UiB/PGP project on modelling and simulation (University of Bergen) 18.6.3 IndustryFunded There are no specific industry funded research activities, but it is important to emphasize that the condition for government RCN funded research is an essential industrial contribution which can vary from 20% to 70%. Thus industry funded research is directly involved in government funded research. 18.6.4 RockEnergyASPilotProject Rock Energy AS is a Norway based company with an ambition to become a leading international geothermal company with competencies in the full geothermal value chain. The company has a patented technology for exploitation of deep geothermal energy from Hot Dry Rocks for generating electricity, and heating and cooling. Rock Energy has a significant global potential due to a less site dependent technology than conventional Hot Dry Rock technologies. The company has received a grant from the governmental agency ENOVA and is presently concluding negotiations with private investors to secure sufficient funding for its planned actions.
