18.9 Future Outlook Shallow geothermal energy (heat pumps) is a well established technology in Norway. However, deep geothermal energy is relatively a new concept for the Norwegian establishment, in particular, for public, politicians, funding agencies, press (media), industry and also research organisations (who depend on funding from the government and industry). The pioneering work in Norway in deep geothermal started when IFE has joined the EU FP6 Soultz project in 2005, and later on the EU FP6 ENGINE project providing expertise on corrosion, scaling and tracer technologies. IFE was the only Scandinavian country that took part in these projects. The next step came when the University of Bergen took the initiative in establishing the CGER centre. This has been a crucial strategic move. CGER is a foundation stone and the heart of the present geothermal activities in Norway linking research institutions, industry and the governmental funding agencies. Some of the key players from CGER, under the leadership of the company Rock Energy, took part in ―Working Group for Geothermal Energy‖ and prepared a strategically important document for Energy21. This document (presently available only in Norwegian) summarises the geothermal status in Norway (in particular deep geothermal) and gives an outlook for geothermal possibilities for Norwegian industry and research establishment. This document is mainly aimed at politicians and governmental agencies, because their support is essential if geothermal activities will succeed in Norway. The next important step in this direction was the establishment of Centre for Environment- friendly Energy Research (FME) for geothermal energy. The objective of the scheme for Centres for Environment-friendly Energy, recently launched and co- funded by the Norwegian Government, is to establish time-limited research centres which conduct concentrated, focused and long-term research of high international calibre in order to solve specific challenges in the field. Until now, the Norwegian Government has established 11 such centres where research activities include different renewable energies (wind, solar, bio, etc.) and also encompass CO2, climate and social science activities. The existence of FME for geothermal energy is essential for future geothermal activities in Norway, because until now many of the research activities were partly dependent on voluntary work of some enthusiastic researchers. 18.10 References Kirsti Midttømme, Inga Berre, Audun Hauge, Thor E.
