the inlet, this lower pressure then draws in additional fluid and continues the fluid flow[70]. This type of a pumping system is referred to as a “rotodymanic” pump because the flow is created greatly through velocity changes as the fluid flows through the impeller and the passages throughout the pump [34]. The following figure shows the basic setup and flow patterns generated in a centrifugal pump. Figure 30. Centrifugal Pump Cross Sections [31] As can be seen in the figure, after the fluid is directed from the inlet, across the impeller and towards the discharge, it is directed into an increasing cross-sectional area called a volute or diffuser. This area is designed with increasing cross-sectional area to reduce the linear velocity of the fluid, and due to the conservation of energy principle, the pressure of the system must be increased. To gain an increase in pressure or flow, additional stages can be added to the pump. This is accomplished by adding another impeller in series with the previous one and can be effective with up to thirty or more impellers operating in a single pump [23]. 69
