Introduction Biogas power generation is increasingly popular as a means of renewable energy generation. Not only are biogas plants extremely efficient, they meet feed-in-tariff requirements in various European countries, qualifying them for attractive incentives. As a result, current biogas plants are sustainable, renewable power generators that help meet clean energy standards. However, the opportunity to further increase efficiency and qualify for additional incentives is technologically viable and economically sound, and many biogas plants in Europe are jumping on board this next evolutionary step in biogas development. Biogas plants are now adding Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology to the biogas generation process to increase the plant efficiency up to 8%, and help qualify for thermal heat incentives otherwise unattainable. The technology enables additional waste heat captured at the site to generate additional electricity, increase thermal heat utilization and lower the onsite power demands. The implementation of this win-win biogas implementation is gaining ground as a more common inclusion at a plant. How it Works Biogas power plants include stationary engines to capture the biogas collected through anaerobic digestion. The engines, in turn, generate kilowatts of electricity to sell to the grid and use for internal processes. Through the inclusion of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power generator, excess engine heat is employed to generate additional electricity. Hot water enters the ORC, where it heats a working fluid into pressurized vapor. The high pressure vapor expands through a power block, spinning an electric generator and creating fuel- free, emission-free power. The vapor is cooled through air or water cooling, and condensed back into a liquid, where it is pumped to the evaporator to repeat the process. Low temperature ORCs have low heat requirements (77-116C) and can connect to either the primary or secondary heat loops in a biogas balance of plant. the onsite electricity needed to reject excess heat through radiator fans, increasing plant The addition of the ORC reduces efficiency by up to 8%.
