• Emerging Technologies –Focus has collaborated with the ITP on various emerging technology efforts, including ethanol plant best practices. Energy Benefits, Economic Viability and Environmental Benefits Wisconsin has a tremendous potential for contributing to Energy Policy Act’s (EPAct) goal of a 2.5 percent reduction in industrial energy use. A sampling of ESA reports completed for all facilities receiving ESAs in Wisconsin, to date, showed a potential savings of 870 billion Btus. This sampling includes only 24 of the 70 ESAs already completed in Wisconsin. Technology # of ESAs kWh MMBtu (Gas) ___________________________________________________ Pumps 10 Process Heating 1 Fans 3 Compressed Air 2 Steam 8 17,089,492 0 6,307,138 838,203 5,707,638 3,171 28,769 16,318 0 719,671 ______________________________________________________ Total 24 29,942,471 767,929 Overall, Wisconsin’s 12,000 industrial customers include many food/dairy processors, accounting for about 43 TBtu per year (17% of industrial consumption). Many of these facilities fit within the target range and would be eligible for Save Energy Now Assessments (SENAs) under the proposed effort. A recent study (Xenergy, 2001) estimated that there is a savings potential of about 5.4 TBtus from these facilities. An estimated 80 percent of total food processing energy is for natural gas. The energy savings potential for boilers, alone, is almost four trillion Btus. Other key Wisconsin industries with high industrial energy use include pulp and paper (21 percent); chemicals, i.e., plastics (9 percent); printing (2 percent). Metalcasting (not included in the target group at this time) uses 27 percent. The total available savings from the target industries is approximately 16 TBtu per year or over 6 percent of Wisconsin industrial use. Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) has been the primary contractor to Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation (WECC) to implement the Focus Industrial program over the past eight years. The Focus Industrial program, through its targeted industry cluster efforts, has developed elaborate relationships with the pulp and paper, food/dairy processing, plastics, and printing industries, working primarily through industry associations, industry leaders, and utilities. The largest 200 companies in Wisconsin have assigned Energy Advisors who work with them personally to support their project efforts. The Focus Industrial
