Values which minimize or maximize the chosen optimization criteria are considered to be optimal in this case. It may be the annual levelized net profit, time of return of investment or any other economic profitability criterion. In waste heat recovery systems net power output/net investment is considered to be the most universal optimization criterion since the others mentioned are dependent on price at which electricity can be sold. It is important to emphasize that this process does not aim at reducing irreversibilities, but allows the finding of irreversibility rates that are most reasonable from an economic point of view. Despite the fact that optimal values of design variables differ from one application to another, the purpose should be to conduct design studies for one universal power plant which ensures the level of performance is close to optimal in its various applications. 75
