Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. La turbina hidráulica es el elemento clave de un aprovechamiento hidroeléctrico. Aprovecha la energía cinética y potencial que contiene el agua, transformándola en un movimiento de rotación, que transferido mediante un eje al generador produce energía eléctrica. Las tres tipologías básicas de turbinas son las siguientes: - Turbina Pelton: se emplea en saltos elevados que tienen poco caudal. Está formada por un rodete móvil con álabes de doble cuenco. Su funcionamiento consiste en el chorro de agua entra en la turbina dirigido y regulado por uno o varios inyectores, incidiendo en los álabes y provocando el movimiento de giro de la turbina. Estos equipos tienen una alta disponibilidad, bajo coste de mantenimiento y su rendimiento es muy alto, superior al 90% en condiciones de diseño, con una curva muy aplanada. - Turbina Francis: es la más implantada ya que se adapta muy bien a todo tipo de saltos y caudales, siendo su rango de utilización muy grande. Su rendimiento también es superior al 90% en condiciones óptimas de funcionamiento, si bien la variación de caudales y saltos que permite está más limitado. - Turbinas Helice, Semikaplan y Kaplan: estos tipos se utilizan en general en saltos pequeños con caudales variables y/o grandes. Las de hélice se componen básicamente de una cámara de entrada abierta o cerrada, un distribuidor fijo, un rodete con 4 o 5 palas fijas en forma de hélice de barco y un tubo de aspiración. Las Semikaplan y Kaplan son variantes de la hélice con diferentes grados de regulación: ambas poseen el rodete con palas ajustables y en el caso de la Kaplan además el distribuidor es regulable, lo que le da un mayor rango de funcionamiento con mejores rendimientos, a cambio de una mayor complejidad y un coste más elevado.
