Situación en España España, al igual que gran parte de los países desarrollados, sustituyó la mayoría de los consumos basados en biomasa, primero por carbón a finales del siglo XIX y luego por combustibles derivados del petróleo o aplicaciones eléctricas durante el siglo XX. De hecho, este consumo quedó relegado solamente a algunos sectores directamente relacionados con la biomasa, como el sector forestal y en algunos casos el agroalimentario o las cerámicas. Aparte de estos sectores, el mayor consumo de biomasa se centró en sistemas tradicionales de calefacción, producción de ACS y cocina, como las antiguas chimeneas o estufas de leña. La mayor parte de la biomasa proviene del sector forestal, que ha sido utilizada tradicionalmente en el sector doméstico mediante sistemas poco eficientes (uso de leñas en equipos obsoletos), pero también las calderas de industrias forestales. La siguiente tabla muestra la distribución del consumo de biomasa según orígenes y aplicaciones en el año 2006, reflejando la importancia de los usos de las leñas forestales y las podas de olivos y otros subproductos del sector de producción de aceite (orujos y orujillos).
