Prawn Farm where heat from the separated geothermal water from the Wairakei geothermal field is used to heat ponds used to rear prawns. Figure 46 Wairakei Prawn Farm heat exchangers. Greenhouse cultivation (tomatoes and capsicums, Mokai) Tomatoes and capsicums are grown in 12 hectares of greenhouses by Gourmet Mokai Ltd on the Mokai Geothermal Field. Orchids (Wairakei) Tropical orchids (Phalaenopsis) are grown in greenhouses by Geotherm Exports heated using a supply of steam taken from wells supplying the Poihipi Road Geothermal Power Station. Ground Source Heat Pumps A number of ground source heat pumps have been installed, three examples are presented below and for details on other installations refer to Appendix 2. • Dunedin Airport (groundwater heat pump energy system by MWH NZ Ltd) – The climate control at Dunedin airport is challenging with an outdoor temperature variation from -9°C to 35°C. The system consists of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (VAC) system for the terminal with a floor area of 10,100 m2. The system uses groundwater pumped from the Taieri aquifer below the airport as its source of energy. Once the heat is extracted at the surface the water is injected back into the ground. In summer, heat taken out of the building is added into the water before it is returned to the ground. Off- the-shelf equipment was assembled to form the system. It can easily be extended with more bores and heat pumps to service planned future terminal expansions (EECA brochure, 2008). • Rowena Jackson Retirement Village, Invercargill – installation of ground source heat pumps for the hot water heating requirements of 20 serviced apartments. Project owner is Ryman Healthcare Ltd (EECA Solarwise 2008). • Domestic Installation, Blenheim – A residential development (320 m2) with underfloor heating using hot water from a GSHP. The proximity of the house to a stream on the property allowed the use of an open loop surface water system. The heat pump has a nominal output of 18 kW, with a nominal coefficient of performance (COP) of 5. The water is pumped approximately 50 m to the heat pump and returned to the stream approximately 8°C cooler. The heat pump provides water at a steady 45°C. The system was installed by Warmfloor, Taupo (www.righthouse.co.nz). 2010 GNS Science Report 2010/20 43
