cooling in schools. These facilities can be retrofitted to existing heating systems as the schools usually have large playing field areas into which the ground loop can be installed. Biomass, Nevada – Infinifuel Biodiesel has constructed a biodiesel processing facility at a small Nevada geothermal power plant in Wabuska. At this facility, camelina oil seed algae is transformed into diesel fuel. The facility is almost entirely self-contained and heat is supplied by the geothermal plant. Ormat Technologies, Inc. signed an agreement with the US-DOE in December 2006 to explore the feasibility of oilfield co-production at the DOE Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center (RMOTC), near Casper Wyoming. RMOTC contains hot water sources higher than 88°C at flow rates sufficient for generation of roughly 200 kW of electric power. 5.4.1.2 Europe The Reykjavik, Iceland, district heating system (Figure 45) supplies heat to a population of around 190,000 people. The installed capacity of 830 MWt is designed to meet all the heating load down to about -10°C; but during colder periods, the additional load is met by large hot water storage tanks and an oil-fired booster station (Ragnarsson, 2005). Each of these piles incorporates a heat pump ground loop. The loops were connected in parallel acting as the ground heat exchanger for a heat pump which provides for the space heating needs for the terminal building.
