Project Highlight No.24 CESI ORC Biomass CHP generator SBTG Distributed Generation with High Penetration of Renewable Energy Sources www.dispower.org info@dispower.org Result realised by: Results: > an innovative SBTG Small Biomass Turbo Generator, producing electrical power and heat, installed and tested during 2005 > The system consists of a turbo cogenerator based on the Organic Rankine Cycle concept, coupled with oil heater that produces the primary thermal input by combustion of wood biomass > Max peak power of 9 kWe reached during the preliminary test > Remote surveillance implemented > Operation in stationary conditions without surveillence verified An innovative way to pro- duce electricity at reduced scale firing biomass The CESI small ORC biomass CHP turbo generator SBTG represents a new way to produce combined heat and power at reduced scale burn- ing wood biomass. This system is thought to find application in rural realties where wood biomass is available at margin- al cost and there is a demand of reduced quantities of heat and power for most time of the year. The system wants to be a valid alternative to the small gasifier - Otto engine concept that today is the unique available way to pro- duce CHP at the scale of few decades of kWe using solid biomass. The SBTG is capable to convert biomass in heat and power with an average efficiency similar to small gasifires but reducing significantly the re- quest of O&M. It is comprised by two main components, an oil heater and a turbo cogen- erator named HER 10. Both of them are conceptually derived from bigger models available on their own niche markets. The realisation of the SBTG system implied a reduction in size and complexity of the reference models and the solu- tion of a number of problems of lay out and control. The result is a small power plant, first and unique in Europe, that produces 10 kWe of power firing biomass, with a high degrade of reliability and automatization. The control of SBTG is ob- tained by a specific software developed by CESI. It permits to operate the system on site or in remote, via Internet, avoiding the presence of op- erator.
