TURBOMACHINERY BEARING AND STATOR OPERATING TEMPERATURES The IST facility includes a subsystem that depresses the pressure in the rotor cavities relative to loop pressure to minimize windage losses. This system collects the shaft labyrinth seal leakage and reinjects it into the loop to minimize mass loss from the system while also providing cooling flow to the bearings and rotor cavities to maintain acceptable operating temperatures. Operations to date have demonstrated successful operation of this system including adequate cooling of the bearings and stators in both the turbo-compressor and turbo- generator. Figure 14 plots bearing and stator temperatures during turbo-compressor startup and subsequent operation at 37,500 rpm which are well below the maximum allowable operating temperature of 300°F (149°C) for the stator, 450°F (232°C) for the compressor-end bearings, and 500°F (260°C) for the turbine-end bearings. Testing to date has shown that with optimized rotor cavity pressure and cooling flow setpoints, this system can maintain bearing and stator temperatures below 200°F (93°C) while operating at 55,000 rpm. Based on this operating experience it is predicted that bearing and stator temperatures can be maintained within operating limits at the design speed of 75,000 rpm.
