> knowledgeable,” says Andreas Söderberg, naval architect and project manager at Opcon, speaking to us directly from MV Figaro. Capable of managing different operational situations “It’s looking very good. We are currently operating the main installa- tion for a longer run – up to 12 hours under surveillance. It’s function- ing mechanically very well, but we will make some adjustments to the control and automation system and the integration with the vessel now that some of the operational conditions for this vessel have changed. There is a lot of testing and adjustments to do to meet the changes and now the machine must be able to cope with more operating situ- ations than previously presented. This is an exciting challenge!” says Andreas Söderberg. When the automation system is adapted and the final integration is completed, Opcon will test the installation and its systems at sea. Further tests will be required before Opcon Powerbox is approved by Lloyd’s Register. “Parts of the Powerbox have already been approved for marine use. But the installed system must be approved in its entirety. You don’t take any chances at sea,” explains Andreas Söderberg. Both new build and post-installation From a fuel-saving point-of-view, the energy that Opcon’s technology recycles from the ship engine’s cooling system and purge air cooler is the most important feature in this first reference installation, but there are a large number of vessels for which steam applications will be of great inter- est. “Above all there are not many systems like our OPB-WST that can function in a standard vessel’s steam sys- tem, and which do not require major adjustments concerning over- heating of the steam, for example. Our technology therefore has good opportunities to be used for both newly built vessels and in post-instal- lations on existing vessels,” says Andreas Söderberg. This technology is already profitable With high oil prices and environmental requirements getting even tougher, Opcon expects this technology to get more and more interest- ing from a commercial viewpoint. “It’s already profitable today. There are large sums of money to save in reducing a vessel’s fuel consumption, and even more in future as demands for more eco-friendly bunker oil increase. Lower fuel con- sumption means reduced emissions and thus even more benefit for the environment. We see that the industry is talking more and more about fuel savings, and many companies are showing interest in our technology. They all want to know how to save fuel at today’s high prices,” says Andreas Söderberg. Top: The larger Opcon Powerbox ORC being installed on the vessel. Middle: The smaller Opcon Powerbox WST has been installed. It generates electricity from surplus steam on the ship. Bottom: The automation system for the Opcon installation is optimized. The next step is to carry out tests at sea. Summary of this article • The first reference installation of Opcon Powerbox technology for producing electricity from waste heat has been installed on board a Wallenius vessel. • This technology produces fuel savings of 4-10 percent, depending on the type of ship and installation, and reduces dangerous emis- sions at sea. • Fine-tuning of the system is now taking place on board the Wallenius vessel. • High oil prices and stricter environmental re- quirements make this technology increasingly commercially viable.
