Commissioning and testing of first reference installation of Opcon technology for ships ►Over the past two years Opcon has collaborated with Wallenius Marine in a project supported by the Swedish Energy Agency aimed at adapting Opcon’s technology for production on sea-going vessels of electricity from low- value waste heat in the vessel’s steam and cooling system. The aim is to save fuel while reducing emissions of CO2, NOx, sul- phur and particles. For this first reference installation aboard the newly built MV Figaro, IMO 9505041, fuel savings are expected to be around 4-6 percent, but the potential in other installations is 5-10 percent. Opcon Powerbox for production of electricity from hot water or wet steam Opcon has developed two marine versions of Opcon Powerbox: • Opcon Powerbox WST (Wet Steam Turbine), which is a special type of steam turbine that generates electricity from wet or saturated steam that does not require overheating – unlike other, more conventional steam turbines. • Opcon Powerbox ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle), which enables utili- zation of low-value heat such as hot water in a vessel’s cooling system. The first reference installation featuring both Opcon Powerbox ORC and Opcon Powerbox WST has now been installed. The larger Opcon Pow- erbox ORC is powered by the vessel’s diesel cooling water and in this installa- tion it can supply at most up to 500 kW. The smaller Opcon Powerbox WST is powered by surplus steam available on the vessel.
