Canada also has less predominant geothermal resources. In addition, hot sedimentary aquifer (HAS)opportunities are believed to exist in the petroleum producing areas of Canada (YK, NT, AB, SK, ON, NF, NS and NB). Figure 22.1 (above) compiled by the Geological Survey of Canada, illustrates the potential for geothermal energy development across the country. The most favourable regions for development include Alberta, British Columbia, and the Yukon and Northwest Territories- all located in the western third of Canada. In these regions the resource is both significant and relatively easily accessible. Hot springs and pools exists in all of these locations, not to mention extensive geological knowledge gained from mineral and oil & gas exploration activities. These data provide a foundation for geothermal exploration even in the absence of government support for geosciences and mapping. 22.1 Highlights and Achievements Continuing the trend of recent years, the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association has grown to approximately 42 members at the end of 2010, including members ranging from geothermal developers, equipment manufacturers, and utilities, to firms specializing in the consulting, engineering, construction, financial, and legal aspects of geothermal energy. Together, CanGEA‘s pure play geothermal producers represent about $1 Billion in market capitalization on the Toronto and Venture Stock Exchange and more than 2,000 MWe of installed geothermal energy globally, though there is currently no domestic geothermal power production in Canada. Nevertheless, the Canadian geothermal industry has been proactive in instituting the Geothermal Code for Public Reporting (the Code) to increase investor confidence and provide an accurate means for comparison within the industry. The Code provides a minimum set of requirements for the public reporting of Exploration Results, Geothermal Resources and Geothermal Reserves. Furthermore, the Code will provide a basis for transparency, consistency and confidence in the public reporting of geothermal information. CanGEA members represent active projects in all parts of the world with more than 1,500 MWe under development and about 2,000 MWe of operating power plants. So, despite marginal activities in Canada yet, the vast experience and resources are a good basis for development in the country. The support of Canadian investors for international geothermal development also is a sign that with the right incentives and investment climate an interest for investment into development in Canada can be achieved. 22.2 National Policy 22.2.1 Strategy The lack in both strategy and direction for the geothermal energy industry on the federal level in Canada continued in 2010 and the outlook is not better either. Direct use and geo-exchange applications have seen continuous support from the federal government, while the geothermal power sector was bluntly ignored. Due to Canada‘s rich energy resources, including vast amounts of hydroelectric, fossil fuel, and nuclear power, there has not been the impetus to explore new alternative energy sources to the same degree as other nations who have sought to attain energy independence. 256PDF Image | Geothermal Research and Tech IEA
