In addition, the Program continued efforts in data collection, modelling and analysis. 21.7.2 Governmentfunded U.S. Federal Government funding for geothermal energy was available through DOE. In 2010, DOE invested US$ 44 million from annual appropriations in geothermal research, development and demonstration and US$ 50 million for ARRA-supported geothermal energy projects. 21.7.3 Industryfunded In 2010, industry invested US$ 700 million in geothermal projects in the form of asset finance, public markets and venture capital/private equity (32). 21.8 Geothermal Education 21.8.1 NationalGeothermalAcademy In January, the U.S. Department of Energy's Geothermal Technologies Program announced a new education initiative. The 8-week intensive summer course for undergraduate and graduate students will cover all aspects of geothermal energy development from resource recovery to utilization. The course is a collaborative effort among faculty from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), Stanford University, Cornell University, Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT), University of Utah, Southern Methodist University, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, West Virginia University and others. Individual modules will also be offered for professional development through UNR's Continuing Education. DOE will provide merit-based financial assistance for up to 20 students from across the nation. 21.8.2 GeothermalResourceCouncil The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) is a tax-exempt non-profit educational association with members in 30 plus countries. The GRC serves as a primary professional educational association for the international geothermal community, encouraging worldwide development of geothermal resources, promoting research and exploration of geothermal resources and serving as a public forum for the world geothermal community.
