New Geothermal Plants for 2010- In 2010, only 15 MWe of nameplate capacity were installed online within the United States (see Table 21.2). Table 21.2 New power plants online in 2010 (13). As of April 2011, the GEA reports that 146 confirmed and unconfirmed projects with up to 1,664 MWe of planned capacity added. The GEA reports that approximately 528-544 MWe of planned capacity additions are in phase III of development (permitting and initial development) and 228 MWe are in phase IV (resource production and power plant construction) (14). In addition, the following areas will likely see future growth as a result of investment by the federal government: Innovative Exploration Technologies- In 2008, the USGS estimated that there is a mean 30 GWe of undiscovered hydrothermal resources in the 13 western states alone (15). Under ARRA, up to US$ 97.1 million was invested in 24 projects to improve technologies to confirm hydrothermal resources with no surface expression. These technologies are expected to lower the risks and cost of exploration, while locating new hydrothermal resources. Low Temperature, Coproduced and Geopressured Resources- Under ARRA, up to US$ 18.7 million was awarded to 10 projects to demonstrate the economic and technical feasibility of power production from low temperature, coproduced and geopressured resources. In addition, in 2010 seven projects were selected through a funding opportunity to research, develop, and demonstrate cutting-edge geothermal energy technologies involving low-temperature fluids, geothermal fluids recovered from oil and gas wells, and highly pressurized geothermal fluids. The total amount of the award is up to US$ 20 million and projects include the development of a scale-resistant heat exchanger, a cascaded use demonstration and demonstration of power generation using low temperature CO2. These demonstrations will widely expand the range of geothermal energy production including new installations in Arizona, Texas and North Dakota, states without previous geothermal electrical production. Enhanced Geothermal Systems- Through ARRA, the DOE expanded its focus from EGS to new technologies, but also made substantial investments in EGS including up to US$ 44.2 million to fund three EGS demonstration projects and up to US$ 111.9 million for component research and development (R&D) including drilling, reservoir characterization and power plant technologies. These technologies will not only accelerate the commercialization of EGS, but will contribute to lowering the cost of electricity for all geothermal resources. For the complete list of projects funded by the Geothermal Technologies Program, see the project database online at: http://www4.eere.energy.gov/geothermal/projects. 21.3.1.5 Number of Wells Drilled Currently, only very preliminary data from the Bureau of Land Management is available. Table 3- 16 indicates that in Fiscal Year 2010, 16 geothermal wells were started on federal land and 7 were completed (16).
