17.7.3 IndustryFunded Industry funded research during 2010 (mostly through Contact Energy and MRP) was pursued in several topic areas, including: silica scaling issues for specific power plants; arsenic removal from separated brines; geotechnical drilling, core analysis and modelling to investigate causes of subsidence anomalies; and micro-seismicity studies. 17.8 Geothermal Education The New Zealand Geothermal Association and the University of Auckland continue to provide relevant annual seminars, the annual New Zealand Geothermal Workshop (held in November), and short courses. In 2010, Auckland University (IESE) continued the international post-graduate training course (a 5-month course from July to November). One-day geothermal information seminars are organised annually by GNS Science for the benefit of members of indigenous Maori Trusts. The New Zealand Geothermal Association also hosts specialised 1-day workshops with invited speakers on topics of interest. Canterbury University (Christchurch) commenced a geothermal programme targeting Masters and PhD students. 17.9 International Cooperative Activities New Zealand scientists and engineers collaborate with geothermal projects throughout the geothermal world including: EGS (USA, Australia) and International Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) high temperature drilling (Iceland). Informal geothermal research collaboration with other countries also occurs through organisations such as GEISER, GEORG, and the IGA. Consulting by New Zealand based geothermal specialist companies (e.g., SKM, PB Power, GNS Science) is undertaken in many geothermal countries. Within the IEA-GIA, New Zealand is the Operating Agent of Annex 1 (environmental), is a participant in Annex V11 (drilling), Annex V111 (direct uses), and Annex X (data provision), and will participate in Annex X1 (induced seismicity). 17.10 Future Outlook Future prospects for geothermal technology and market development in New Zealand in 2011 and beyond are promising. The Ngatamariki 82 MWe and Te Mihi 166 MWe projects will undergo construction and commissioning, and advances will be made in planning other projects. A world- first geothermally-heated milk processing factory at Mokai (Miraka) commissioned in 2011, will use high grade steam from the existing borefield. Geothermal policy development for the Regional Councils, designed to provide more certainty to resource users, and protection for outstanding natural features, will proceed as planned. The effects of the emissions trading scheme will have a positive influence on investment decisions in new geothermal developments. In 2011 New Zealand will apply for official membership of the IPGT (International Partnership for Geothermal Technology) through the Ministry of Science and Technology. 17.11 References Barnett, P and Quinlivan, P., 2009.
