New Zealand‘s geothermal operating capacity at the end of 2010 was 758 MWe, (assuming that the maximum operating capacity of Ohaaki was 69 MWe rather than 103 MWe). Gross installed capacity was 792 MWe. Details are given in Table 17.1. The total electricity generated with geothermal energy in 2010 was 5,550 GWh, a 21% per annum growth rate over the previous year. This growth occurred after two new power plants (Nga Awa Purua and Te Huka) were commissioned (at the start of the second quarter of the 2010 year), so the total generation does not yet represent a full year of operation at installed capacity. The average generating capacity factor (from the second quarter) was ~90%. 17.3.1.1 Rates and Trends in Development Under construction in 2010- The Nga Awa Purua power plant at Rotokawa Geothermal Field was successfully completed ahead of schedule in early 2010. It consists of a Fuji 140 MWe triple- flash single-axle turbine, the largest of its type in the world. The Te Huka power plant in the nearby Tauhara Geothermal Field was also successfully completed early in 2010. It is a 23 MWe Ormat binary plant. Projects committed, consents granted and designs/equipment contracts well advanced- Te Mihi (northern Wairakei) contracts have been signed and construction has started on a 166 MWe development for Contact Energy (two Toshiba 83 MWe turbines). This will replace several aging turbines (~45 MWe) at the Wairakei power station with more efficient plant, while still staying within the existing consented resource fluid take and discharge limits. At Ngatamariki, EPC contracts have been signed and civil works started on an 82 MWe Ormat power plant (four 20.5 MWe units) for MRP/Rotokawa Joint Venture. MRP have contracted an Icelandic drilling rig to undertake the required drilling for the project over a period of 2 years. Future projects at an early stage of planning:  Rotoma 1 (35 MWe, consent application lodged in 2009, declined in 2010)  Tauhara II (250 MWe, consent application lodged, heard and granted in 2010)  Taheke (an estimated 50 MWe, 3 slim-hole exploration drill-holes completed)  Tikitere (45 MWe, contract signed for Ormat BOT power plant subject to consents and drilling results, drilling due to commence in 2012) Kawerau(50MWe nearKa22onA8Dland forEastlandGroupatplanningstages) Possible future projects under consideration (see Figure 17.2 for locations):  Rotokawa expansion (67 MWe)  Mokai expansion (40 MWe) Rotorua (1 MWe units?) Several other ̳green-field‘ geothermal systems within the Taupo Volcanic Zone also have considerable development potential. As a consequence, there is a high probability of increasing geothermal production in New Zealand by at least 50% within the next 5-10 years. 188
