In Schlieren, a pipeline to the Werdhölzli wastewater treatment plant equalizes the difference between heating and cooling, with treated wastewater being pumped to the energy centres. An increased demand for cooling produces a surplus of heated water, which is then recooled with water from the treatment plant. This is a highly efficient cooling, since the water is typi- cally colder than the outdoor temperature in the summer. If there is greater demand for heating than for cooling, the treatment plant water is used as a source for heat pumps. Energy balance. The waste heat produced by cooling sup- plies approximately 30 % of the required heat; some 55 % is supplied by the heat pump, with wastewater from the treatment plant serving as a source.
