Biomass to energy counter current gasiFication Processes GENERATION OF RENEWABLE POWER AND HEAT USING FRESH LANDSCAPING MATERIALS. Eisenmann offers power plants based on wood gasification technology, with an output of up to 5 MWel. The political and public call for renewables to replace nuclear power is causing a seismic shift in the energy market. Renewables need to guarantee a baseload power supply – and decentralized biomass power plants are playing an increasingly important role in making this possible. These decentralized plants with an output range of 2-5 MWel are set to become a key part of the renewable energies mix. Technical description of counter current gasification system for wood chips A screw conveyor feeds the wood via a system of locks into the top of the fixed bed gasifier. The facility uses a counter current method. The gasification medium, air saturated with water vapor, flows into the reaction chamber from the bottom. The gasification process occurs in four stages, from the bottom to the top of the reactor. The oxidation and reduction zone forms at higher temperatures. As the bed height increases and the temperature sinks, the pyrolysis zone forms in the bed of wood chips, followed by a drying phase. At the top of the reactor, the product gas exits the chamber at about 80 °C. It is cleaned by passing through a two-stage cooling process and an electro-filter, before being fed into the gas motor of the combined heat and power plant. To prevent diffuse emissions of wood gas from the plant, the entire process is run in a partial vacuum. Before the gas enters the motors, it is drawn out of the gasifiers and through the cleaning process by designated systems – which then increase the pressure to the level required for the gas motors. The condensate produced when the gas is cleaned contains bio-oils. It is separated into fractions before being burnt in a combustion chamber in line with legal thresholds. The thermal energy generated can be used as process heat for local industrial plants, public buildings and district heating networks. In all these cases, this represents a substitution of fossil fuels. Another possibility is to generate electricity by means of an ORC system (organic rankine cycle), and sell it at the tariff set under the German Renewable Energy Act (EEG).
