Curriculum Vitae Hailei Wang, Ph.D. Senior Investigator, Advanced Energy Systems Microproducts Breakthrough Institute (MBI) School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (MIME) Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97331 Phone: (541) 713-1354 (Work), (541) 908-4700 (Cell) Email: wanghai@engr.orst.edu Education  Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Oregon State University (OSU), September 2002 – June 2006  M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Texas Tech University (TTU), September 2000 – August 2002  B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Southwest Petroleum University, China, Sept. 1988 – July 1992 Academic Credentials Senior Investigator, Advanced Energy Systems, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97331, January 2011 – present  Principal Investigator of DOD Tactical Energy System program. Direct the program to develop advanced energy conversion and management technologies, including thermally activated cooling technology using micro heat exchangers to effectively utilize engine waste heat and renewable energy sources (such as solar thermal and geothermal) to generate space cooling or refrigeration.  Principal Investigator of Thermal Approach Grid-scale Energy Storage (TAGES), which takes a unique approach for thermal energy storage and then taps low-grade waste heat or geothermal heat for attractive round trip efficiency. It is a cost-effective and environment-sound alternative grid energy storage solution to pumped hydro, CAES and more expensive batteries. The technology is currently being commercialized through a start-up company.  Principal Investigator on OSU side for a steel plant waste heat recovery study using technologies combining high temperature thermoelectric generation (TEG) and organic Rankine bottoming cycle. The expected overall thermal conversion efficiency reaches 21 percent with waste heat temperature between 500 and 600 °C.  Principal Investigator for an ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) study using microchannel heat exchangers to reduce plant size, weight and cost.  Principal Investigator for a NSF/DOE proposal addressing advanced combustion engines using proprietary engine waste heat recovery and emission control technologies. Research Associate and Team Lead, School of MIME, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97331, June 2006 – December 2010  Led a small group of graduate students to successfully develop of a 5.3 kW heat activated cooling demonstration system for US Army. The innovative heat activated cooling system integrates an organic Rankine cycle with a vapor compression cooling cycle. The demo system uses highly efficient scroll expander and microchannel heat exchangers to achieve high coefficient of performance (COP) with challenging size and weight requirements. 1
