The global population now exceeds seven billion, predicted to rise to nine billion, and coupled with a perfectly reasonable desire for much of that population to increase its living standards, it is clear that we cannot continue with current resource use models. The need to balance the three aspects of sustainability (environment, society and cost) has never been more apparent than in how we obtain the energy that we all need, where security of supply, affordability and environmental impact are all critical factors. At this time every year, news headlines talk about above inflation increases in energy prices whilst environmentalists are calling for clarity from government on how we are going to achieve our 2020 climate change targets, warning that a new dash for unabated fossil gas is not the answer. whilst this may sound like a bleak view, it is actually a great chance for those businesses that recognise the need for change to seize the opportunity to develop new markets based on a sustainable offering. ADBA estimates that over 10% of the country’s domestic gas demand could be supplied from biomethane produced from AD and delivered through the existing gas distribution system. At a time when gas imports have risen above domestic production, AD could have a big role to play in energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting climate smart farming and stabilising future energy prices. we have just had the 200th anniversary of the gas manufacturing industry in the uK, an industry that used coal to manufacture town gas and which, at its peak, saw a manufactured gas plant in every town. Perhaps the time is now right to recreate that industry, this time based on a sustainable fuel source with AD as a major player. www.adbiogas.co.uk NoVemBer 2012 | AD & BIogAs News 3
