Chile is also considering investments in nuclear generation. Electricity consumption In Latin America, Brazil had the fastest growth in electricity use in the 1970’s but that rate has been declining fast in the last two decades. Mexico electricity use also experienced a sharp decline in the last decade. On the other hand, electricity use in the Andean region, Central America and the Caribbean increased but a lower rate than in the 1990’s. Forty years later, this had declined to 16 percent as a result of increased energy efficiency. Wood met 70 percent of residential energy needs in 1970; it is now around 30 percent. Use of wood for energy correlates to income levels: wood is the fuel of choice for the poor. Wood is also an inefficient energy source that carries both high health care costs, particularly for children, and high environmental costs due to deforestation.
