One of the highest priorities in the development? of the Lysholm engine is the reduction of leakage losses. The choice of a smaller volumetric expansion ratio was an attempt in this direction. A smaller expansion r a t i o decreases the leakage frac- tion, since a smaller volume ratio means a larger inlet volume and hence a greater mass flow while the leakage remains relatively constant. Reducing the volumetric expansion zatiafromthe previous 5.3 to 4.0 yields an- increase intake volume and intake mass of (5.3 -4;0)/4.0or thirty-three percent. Meanwhile the leakage rate was expected to stay near constant since,at the pressure ratios a t which the machine was to be operated,the leakage paths were calculated to be fully choked. Flow rate for a given expansion ratio was predicted or that ratio, and then ed i n 5.3 expansion Ideal or theoretical flow rate was calculated by multiplying the density of the fluid and the speed.
