The preparation of reactive polyurethanes, the photo-polymerisation and copolymerisation of acrylates in emulsion as well as solution and the precipitation and reactive precipitation to prepare BaSO4 and silver nano-particles, respectively, employing a spinning disk reactor (SDR) are summarised. The advantages of a SDR (excellent mass and heat transfer, minimal energy and material usage, easy scale up as well as flexibility) are discussed. Where experiments are described comparing the SDR with traditional batch processes, known, optimised industrial batch processes were chosen. In all cases the SDR could be shown to yield equivalent product quality while having procedural advantages. Introduction If one compares the chemical plant from 1556 and 2002 shown in Figure 1 then it is immediately apparent that, apart from the rather different materials used for construction, there are a lot of similarities; such as the stirrer, the general form of the reactor and much more. It might be an exaggeration but one could almost be led to believe that time in this very technical area has stood still! However, more recently, not least with the development of so called Process Intensification (PI), it seems that considerable changes in process technology are afoot. Stankiewicz[1] defines PI as follows: “Process intensification is innovative equipment, processing and process development methods that compared to those used today, a New address: Evonik Degussa GmbH, Rodenbacher Chaussee 4, 63457 Hanau-Wolfgang, Germany b New address: BASF Construction Chemicals France SAS, 10 rue des Cévennes, Lisses, 91017 Evry Cedex, France 1
