Introduction Medicinal plants used as major natural source for drug formulation and the treatment of human ailments. Nature has blessed to the plant with a magical phenomenon to produce bioactive secondary metabo- lites. Various natural products are made and used for day to day. Synthe- sis of nanoparticles is one of recent biomedicine production process from the medicinal plants. Nanoparticles exhibit unique properties due to their size, distribution and morphology. Synthesis of nanoparti- cles from leaf extract is economic, eco-friendly, easily scaled up for large scale synthesis and does not need the use of toxic chemicals, high pressure, temperature and energy [1]. Green synthesized AgNPs have tremendous application such as drug delivery [2], gene therapy [3], spectrally selective coatings for solar energy absorption and interca- lation material for solar energy batteries, as optical receptors, catalysts in chemical reactions [4,5], biolabeling, and as antimicrobial [6,7], anti- fungal [8] and antioxidant agents [9]. The growing needs to develop clean, non-toxic and eco-friendly procedures for synthesis of nano- particles have resulted researchers to work enthusiastically in biological systems [2]. ⁎ Correspondingauthor. The synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were characterized with UV–Vis-spectroscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), transmission elec- tron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The UV-spectra show maximum absorbance at 435 nm, NTA analysis shows 78 nm average sizes of nanoparticles, TEM analysis indicates spherical shape of the nanoparticles with the average diameter of 50 nm. The XRD peaks at 2θ range of 30–80° correspond to (111), (200), (220), (311) reflection planes that indicate the structure of metallic silver. FTIR analysis reveals surface capping of phenolic groups. Existence of peaks in the range of 1611 to 1400 cm− 1 indicates the presence of aromatic rings in the leaf extract. The peak at 1109 cm−1 is due to the presence of OH groups. The antioxidant activity of synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated performing DPPH assay and it is observed that the photosynthesized nanoparticle also possesses antioxidant potentials. Thus, it can be used as potential free radical scavenger. Silver particles have tremendous applications in the field of diagnostics and therapeutics. To this context, the surface coating of plant metabolite constituents has great potentials. Therefore, the present work has been undertaken to synthesize the AgNPs using leaf extract of medicinal plant, E. scaber, to characterize and access their antioxidant properties. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. The leaves are mostly radical and they form a spreading rosette on the ground. Inflorescence is large, flat at the top and terminal nearly 2.5 cm across. E. scaber L. is an herb and distributed all over the world, but found abundantly in America. This genus has 32 species of which only one species, name- ly, E. scaber is known to occur in India [10]. In an Ayurvedic system of medicine, the extract of this plant is describe to have pungent and bitter taste and it is used as antipyretic, alexipharmic and cough pre- ventive medicine. It is also potentially effective on disorders of blood, heart and bronchitis. In Yunani system of medicine, this plant is described as an analgesic and its extract is used as a brain tonic. The leaves are used in pain and piles. The flowers are aphrodi- siac. This plant is also used for liver troubles. E. scaber is used as di- uretic in Indonesia and as a febrifuge in Madagascar [11]. E. scaber L. is known for containing large number of bioactive compounds such as lipids, phytochemicals, pharmaceutics and pigments. For example, ethyl hexadecanoate, ethyl-9, 12-octadecadienoate, ethyl-(Z)-9-octadecenoate, ethyl octadecanoate, lupeol, stigmasterol, stigmasterol glucoside, deoxyelephantopin (1) and two new germacranolide sesquiterpene lactones namely 17, 19-dihydrodeoxyelephantopin (2) and iso-17, 19- dihydrodeoxyelephantopin. It is reported that the phytoconstituents of this species are used for antitumor drug formulations, as a hepato- protective, wound healing and anti-inflammatory agent [12,13].
