One of these methods has recently developed by researchers at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts along with assistance from other sources [73]. This technology uses a quantum-coupled single-electron thermal to electric conversion scheme. This technology takes the same principles of thermophotovoltaics described in the previous section and adds to it, however this method can achieve higher power production per unit area than other methods by using thermal fluctuations in the near-surface electric fields. While the thermophotovoltaic alone is bounded in efficiency by the black body radiation concept, this technology has been observed to exceed this limit in lab experiments. To achieve this increase in efficiency, a converter is required to transport this thermal energy to the interior of the photo diode. This converter consists of a narrow, vacuum gap that separates the hot side from the cold side of the structure.
