HEAT RECOVERY – SECONDARY LOOP The working fluid is in the receiver as a liquid at the condensing pressure and temperature (1). Its pressure is raised by the pump to the evaporating pressure (2). It passes through the economizer to take heat out of the gas leaving the turbine. This improves the system efficiency. The working fluid is now a warmer, high pressure liquid (3). In the evaporator HX2, the primary loop heat is transferred to the working fluid which turns into a high pressure vapor (4). It then enters the turbine where its pressure drops across the turbine to the condensing pressure (5), spinning the turbine connected to a generator. The driving force is the pressure difference between the turbine inlet and outlet, the optimum efficiency being obtained with an 8:1 ratio. The working fluid still has an enormous amount of heat, some of which is transferred to the pumped liquid in the economizer. This helps in both ways: - Less heat has to be dissipated by the air-condenser. - The evaporation requires less energy due to the liquid being pre-warmed. Finally, the low pressure vapor (6) passes through a heat exchanger that rejects heat directly into the atmosphere. The working fluid returns to a liquid state (1) and is ready to repeat the cycle.
