INTRODUCTION In the specific context of landfills, the heat of many combined heat and power (CHP) installations is wasted due to lack of users. The thermal energy that comes from engine or turbine exhaust gas and their eventual cooling circuits is simply dissipated into the atmosphere. The unit developed by Verdesis enables the transformation of this heat into electricity and improves the efficiency of the whole power plant. It is made of two parts: - A heat recovery loop - An organic Rankine cycle (ORC) THE ORC TECHNOLOGY The ORC is a thermodynamic cycle based on a heat-transfer fluid whose boiling point under atmospheric pressure (15°C) is far lower than that of water. Therefore, evaporation is possible even with a low-grade heat source. In a vapor state, the fluid drives a turbine connected to a 125 kW generator. Today, the Verdesis biogas valorization power plant in Saint-Laurent des Hommes, France, first of its kind to combine microturbines and an ORC. technology is mature and several references are operating.
