Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. 4.11 SECTOR SOLAR TERMOELÉCTRICO 4.11.1 Descripción del sector Subsectores La energía solar termoeléctrica consiste en el aprovechamiento de la energía del sol para la obtención de energía eléctrica, a través del calentamiento de un fluido. Agrupa actualmente cuatro áreas tecnológicas con distinta madurez comercial y distintas perspectivas, que se describen con mayor detalle en el apartado 4.11.2. - Centrales de receptor central de torre. - Centrales cilindroparabólicas. - Centrales disco-parabólicas o disco-fresnel (normalmente asociadas a motor Stirling u otros motores de combustión externa). - Centrales con concentradores lineales de fresnel. En España, actualmente están en explotación, construcción, o promoción numerosas centrales de las cuatro tecnologías principales, si bien la mayoría son de tecnología cilindroparabólica. Podría considerarse una quinta área, las centrales de torre de aire o chimeneas solares, pero están muy poco desarrolladas y no se suelen considerar entre las opciones tecnológicas actuales, aunque en Manzanaes (Ciudad Real) estuvo en operación un prototipo de esta tipología. Situación actual en el mundo El sector solar termoeléctrico se encuentra en la fase de despegue comercial, especialmente en España. Tras las primeras iniciativas en EE.UU. durante los años 80 y 90, el desarrollo del sector ha estado prácticamente detenido hasta esta nueva etapa. Las tres áreas de mayor interés actualmente en el mundo son España, EE.UU., y países MENA (Oriente Medio y Norte de África). Otros países como India, China, y Australia, así como Chile en Sudamérica, podrían ser también mercados importantes. En el norte de África y Oriente Medio se ha comenzado por instalaciones de ciclo combinado de gas integrado con energía solar (ISCC, por sus siglas en inglés). En EE.UU. y España las centrales son básicamente solares. En el año 2010 la potencia total en operación en el mundo sin España era de 429 MW. En España a finales de 2010 estaban finalizados 632 MW, que representaban un 60% del total mundial en operación. La potencia en construcción en el mundo (sin España) es de 160 MW. En España a finales de 2010 estaban en construcción 1.000 MW, aproximadamente un 86% del total mundial en construcción. La potencia en promoción en el mundo (sin España) es de 5.025 MW.
