Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. Calefacción urbana (“District Heating” en inglés) La calefacción urbana o district heating es una de las aplicaciones para usos colectivos que requieren instalaciones de mayor superficie de captación solar y que más facilita el uso conjunto de otras fuentes energéticas (fósiles o renovables) incluso en sistemas comunitarios ya existentes. En Europa actualmente se emplea un 14% de energías renovables como fuente de energía para este tipo de sistemas. Suecia fue el primer país en instalar un sistema de district heating alimentado con energía solar en la década de los 70. Hoy en día dispone de 22 complejos solares de este tipo, pero es Dinamarca el país que dispone de la mayor instalación (18.300 m2) que alimenta el sistema de calefacción urbana de la ciudad de Marstal. Actualmente está en marcha el proyecto “Sunstore 4”, que comenzó en agosto de 2010, que trata de ampliar la instalación solar existente en la población de Marstal en 15.000 m2 más, para alcanzar una cobertura del 55%. Se pretende extender la experiencia adquirida promoviendo la instalación de proyectos similares en otros 10 países europeos, incluido España. Otro proyecto en el área de district heating, promovido por la Agencia Internacional de la Energía, es el denominado “SDH Take-off”, que comenzó en octubre de 2010. Trata de introducir en el mercado este tipo de aplicaciones uniendo expertos en la tecnología solar y en district heating, que analizarán los condicionantes del mercado y contribuirán en los planes normativos, ayudas, planes de difusión, etc. Desalación solar térmica Una aplicación muy interesante para los sistemas solares es su incorporación a los procesos de desalación de agua marina, al proporcionar la energía térmica necesaria para el proceso. Es habitual la coincidencia de disponibilidad de recurso solar con la falta de disponibilidad de agua potable y proximidad al agua de mar. Estos sistemas de desalación mediante energía solar abarcarían desde los sistemas pasivos basados en evaporación (Solar Still) hasta complejos sistemas integrados en plantas termosolares de generación eléctrica.
