Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. Sistemas de refrigeración solar El aumento de aparatos de refrigeración mediante compresores ha sido significativo en los últimos años, provocando con ello un aumento importante de la demanda de energía eléctrica durante el verano. Como alternativa surgen los sistemas de refrigeración solar, que resultan especialmente interesantes dado que coincide la mayor disponibilidad del recurso solar con el aumento de la demanda de refrigeración. Existen diferentes sistemas y tecnologías para conseguir la climatización a partir de energía solar térmica. Por un lado los sistemas cerrados que utilizan máquinas de absorción de simple y doble efecto y máquinas de adsorción, y por otro los sistemas abiertos como la desecación y refrigeración evaporativa. Se están desarrollando programas europeos que tratan de integrar estos sistemas con los sistemas de climatización convencionales y facilitar la posible combinación de la energía solar térmica con las tecnologías e instalaciones existentes. No obstante, la tecnología más utilizada hasta la fecha con energía solar es la basada en ciclo de absorción de simple efecto, capaz de aprovechar la energía térmica generada por los captadores solares para la producción de frío. Las altas temperaturas necesarias para la utilización de ciclos de refrigeración térmicos con máquina de absorción obligan a la utilización de captadores solares de alto rendimiento. En general, dado el carácter singular de este tipo de instalaciones, el diseño y la instalación debe permitir que las máquinas trabajen siempre que sea posible en el rango superior de su intervalo de temperaturas de funcionamiento; de este modo, se aprovechará al máximo el recurso disponible y las máquinas trabajarán a mejor rendimiento.
