Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. A nivel internacional y europeo existen diferentes programas en curso que promueven la investigación y el desarrollo de la tecnología. La Agencia Internacional de la Energía, AIE, dentro del programa SHC solar heating and cooling, está actualmente desarrollando diferentes tareas encaminadas entre otras cosas a la integración arquitectónica, sistemas de almacenamiento térmico, grandes instalaciones solares, etc. Por otro lado, la UE trabaja diversas líneas de investigación en las que la energía solar térmica tiene una parte activa y fundamental dada su amplia capacidad de desarrollo. Para analizar la situación actual y las perspectivas tecnológicas del sector solar térmico, se distinguen los diferentes grupos de aplicaciones. Aplicaciones de agua caliente sanitaria (ACS), calefacción y piscinas La aplicación de energía solar térmica con mayor implantación es la generación de ACS, que transforma la energía incidente que llega a los captadores en forma de radiación solar en energía térmica que calienta el fluido que circula por su interior (habitualmente mezclas de agua con anticongelante). Esta energía transferida en forma de agua caliente es cedida generalmente a otro circuito, donde se acumula en un depósito acumulador que actuará como depósito de inercia térmica hasta que se produzca el uso final de la energía en forma de agua caliente sanitaria, apoyo a la calefacción por suelo radiante o para la climatización de piscinas. Esquema típico de instalación solar térmica para ACS Fuente: IDAE Dentro de las mencionadas aplicaciones, la tecnología más extendida a nivel comercial es la correspondiente a los captadores planos vidriados, que también permiten la calefacción mediante suelo radiante.
