Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. 4.9 SECTOR SOLAR FOTOVOLTAICO 4.9.1 Descripción del sector Subsectores La energía solar fotovoltaica aprovecha la radiación solar para transformarla directamente en energía eléctrica mediante el efecto fotovoltaico. Este efecto consiste en la emisión de electrones por un material cuando se le ilumina con radiación electromagnética. Podríamos clasificar las tecnologías fotovoltaicas atendiendo a la tipología del semiconductor utilizado: Silicio Capa delgada de otros materiales - Telururo de cadmio. - CIS y CIGS, diseleniuro de indio y cobre, con galio en ocasiones. - Células multiunión de materiales de los grupos III y V de la tabla periódica (arseniuros de indio y galio). Células orgánicas - Células de diversos materiales (por ejemplo, polímeros), con un gran potencial pero aún por desarrollar. Situación actual en el mundo La energía solar fotovoltaica ha experimentado un crecimiento exponencial en los últimos años, impulsada por la necesidad de asumir los retos que en materia de generación de energía se presentan. Este crecimiento se ha producido gracias a los mecanismos de fomento de algunos países que, como España, han propiciado un gran incremento de la capacidad global de fabricación, distribución e instalación de esta tecnología. A finales de 2010, la potencia acumulada en el mundo era de aproximadamente 40.000 MWp según datos de la European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA), de los cuales cerca de 29.000 MWp, un 72%, se localiza en la Unión Europea.
