Dado que aún están en fase de pruebas, apenas se dispone de datos para valorar su eficiencia energética y rentabilidad económica. Por todo ello, no es una tecnología que, a día de hoy, pueda considerarse probada en su aplicación a la valorización de residuos urbanos. En cambio, tecnologías como la gasificación, la pirólisis o el plasma, aún presentan potencial de desarrollo para superar sus actuales limitaciones en cuanto a la valorización de residuos. En cuanto a la producción de CSR, los principales procesos de producción son por tratamiento mecánico-físico y por biosecado (seguido de una clasificación posterior).
