Proceso de gasificación de residuos Fuente: RESA, Estudio Situación y potencial de valorización energética directa de residuos El principal inconveniente de la gasificación, en su aplicación a los residuos, es que requiere que éstos lleguen con unas especificaciones de calidad concretas, que exigen pretratamientos que reduzcan el contenido de inertes y humedad y lleven el tamaño de partícula a 80-300 mm. Además, deberán tener una cantidad de carbono suficiente para poder llevarse a cabo las reacciones de gasificación. Esto hace que, a día de hoy, tenga limitaciones en su aplicación a flujos de residuos como los residuos municipales. La pirólisis, consistente en una degradación térmica en ausencia de oxígeno añadido, es aún más restrictiva en cuanto a los residuos que puede valorizar. Estos residuos deben proceder de una recogida separada (o, en su defecto, deben someterse a un sistema de clasificación previo a la planta de pirólisis), no siendo admisibles residuos como los voluminosos, metales, materiales de construcción y algunos plásticos (como el PVC). Tampoco puede considerarse aún una tecnología probada para la valorización de grandes flujos de residuos como los municipales. El plasma es la tecnología de tratamiento de residuos más novedosa de entre las descritas. El plasma es un estado de la materia en el cual prácticamente todos los átomos han sido ionizados.
