Planta de incineración en horno de parrilla Fuente: RESA, Estudio Situación y potencial de valorización energética directa de residuos El horno rotativo consiste en un cuerpo cilíndrico ligeramente inclinado en su eje horizontal. El cilindro está normalmente ubicado sobre rodillos, permitiendo que el horno rote u oscile alrededor de su eje en un movimiento recíproco, de manera que el residuo se mueve a través del horno impulsado tanto por la gravedad como por la rotación. A fin de alargar la vida del material de las paredes del horno, algunos disponen también de una camisa refrigerada. Para conseguir una completa combustión de los residuos en este tipo de hornos, el tiempo de residencia suele oscilar entre 30 y 90 minutos, dependiendo este tiempo del ángulo horizontal del cuerpo cilíndrico y de la velocidad de rotación. En este tipo de hornos se puede valorizar prácticamente cualquier tipo de residuo, si bien sus mayores costes de explotación y la dificultad de escalarlos para grandes capacidades, hacen que en la práctica se usen actualmente para residuos peligrosos.
