Fuente: INTECSA-IDAE (1980) Del cuadro anterior se extraía que el potencial de futura utilización con pequeñas centrales (en los años 80, se consideraban las centrales menores de 5.000 kW) era de 6.700 GWh y con aprovechamientos medianos y grandes era de 27.300 GWh/año. Desde esa fecha hasta la actualidad se han desarrollado parte de esos recursos, concretamente los proyectos de centrales hidroeléctricos puestos en marcha han supuesto un potencial de 2.200 GWh, por lo que teóricamente el potencial hidroeléctrico pendiente de desarrollar sería de 4.500 GWh. No obstante, calcular los volúmenes de energía hidroeléctrica que estarán disponibles en el futuro es una tarea cada vez más compleja, ya que gran parte de los antiguos métodos utilizados con este fin resultan hoy inviables por temas medioambientales y por otros factores no considerados en esos momentos como los efectos del cambio climático. Un informe elaborado por IEEE Spectrum, medio especializado que pertenece al Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (USA), que recoge el trabajo de ingenieros y expertos en todo el planeta, esboza un posible panorama sobre la realidad del sector hidroeléctrico dentro de 40 años. En el siguiente mapa se plasma el resultado de esta investigación, titulada Cambios previstos en la producción hidroeléctrica al 2050, donde se muestran las áreas críticas y los sectores con mayor potencial en cuanto a generación hidroeléctrica en todo el mundo.
