Sus aplicaciones abarcan piscinas climatizadas y balneoterapia, calefacción y refrigeración —incluidos los sistemas energéticos de distrito—, producción de agua caliente sanitaria (ACS), acuicultura y aplicaciones agrícolas (invernaderos y calentamiento de suelos) e industriales (extracción de minerales y secado de alimentos y maderas). El uso del calor geotérmico en aplicaciones distintas de la generación de electricidad se ha realizado, tradicionalmente, a pequeña escala, pero los continuos avances tecnológicos han permitido su aprovechamiento en proyectos urbanos e industriales de gran envergadura. En el sector residencial y de servicios la energía geotérmica permite reducir el consumo de gasóleo, gas natural y butano, todos ellos de origen fósil y no renovable, de una forma limpia y sencilla adaptable a cualquier tipo de sistema de climatización actual. Para ello se realizan instalaciones basadas en un circuito que aprovecha el fluido geotérmico para distribuirlo a las viviendas para climatización e incluso para agua caliente sanitaria. Los datos disponibles indican que, a finales del año 2009, el número de países en el mundo que hacían uso de la misma era de 78, con una capacidad instalada de 50.583 MWt. Esta última cifra representa un crecimiento del 78,9% respecto a los datos de 2005, lo que significa un incremento anual medio del 12,33%, con un factor de capacidad1 de 0,27 (equivalente a 2.365 horas de operación a plena carga al año). La energía térmica utilizada fue de 121.696 GWh/año (438.071 TJ/año), lo que significa un 60,2% más que en 2005 (9,9% de incremento anual). Ello supuso un ahorro energético por año estimado de 307,8 millones de barriles de petróleo (46,2 millones de toneladas), así como un ahorro de emisiones de 148,2 millones de toneladas de CO2 (comparado con el empleo de petróleo para generar electricidad).
