Geotermia para generación de electricidad Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial muchos países fueron atraídos por la energía geotérmica, al considerarla económicamente competitiva respecto de otras fuentes energéticas, pues no requiere ser importada y, en algunos casos, es la única fuente de energía local. Muchas regiones tienen recursos geotérmicos accesibles, especialmente aquellos países en la zona del “Anillo de Fuego”, alrededor del océano Pacífico, en zonas de expansión oceánica, de ruptura cortical y puntos calientes. En el siguiente gráfico se presenta la evolución, desde el año 1980, de la potencia mundial instalada de origen geotérmico para producción de electricidad y el incremento evolutivo a lo largo de estos años. Se puede observar que, durante el periodo 2005-2010, la potencia ha seguido un incremento lineal anual del orden de unos 350 MWe, hasta superar los 10 GW en el año 2010, lo que significa un 19,9% con respecto al año 2005.
