Fuente: British Wind energy association, International Energy Agency–Ocean Energy Systems Según un reciente estudio realizado por los consultores Frost & Sullivan, el recurso global de energía de las olas puede valorarse en 6.000 TWh/año, el doble de la producción actual de las centrales nucleares, lo que supone un potencial de mercado mundial cuantificable en 1 billón de dólares. Este estudio sostiene que la comercialización de la energías de las olas y mareas será factible entre 5 y 10 años, a medida que la tecnología evolucione y los costes de producción disminuyan (Chin Wai Loon, www.technicalinsights.frost.com). Actualmente en España se están desarrollando los primeros proyectos pilotos de aprovechamiento de energía de las olas, con diferentes prototipos. El desarrollo de tecnología nacional para distintos tipos de prototipos y proyectos de desarrollo de varios centros de pruebas permite pensar en un importante desarrollo industrial en el área de las energías del mar. Actualmente, los proyectos están en fase de demostración y se espera que para el año 2016 esté definida la mejor tecnología de captación de energía del mar, que permita el desarrollo comercial del sector con la puesta en marcha de las primeras plantas comerciales de producción de energía eléctrica proveniente del mar. Se ha considerado que en el año 2016 una vez comprobada la fiabilidad de los equipos y dependiendo del marco legal que esté establecido, la potencia instalada será de unos 10 MW. Suponiendo que a partir del año 2016 y hasta 2020 el incremento de potencia anual instalada será de una media de 20-25 MW por año, se tiene un objetivo a 2020 que alcanza los 100 MW. Figura 4.4.28.
