Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. En agosto de 2008, Portugal tomó la decisión de crear una zona piloto con una potencia total de 250 MW para el desarrollo tecnológico de nuevos prototipos en fase precomercial e industrial. El centro de pruebas estará ubicado a 120 km al norte de Lisboa a una profundidad de entre 30 y 90 metros y con una extensión de 320 km2. La zona piloto permitirá la instalación de todo tipo de dispositivos de energías marinas incluida la eólica off-shore. Muchas de las actividades de promoción de la energía de las mareas y las olas en el Reino Unido se han centrado en el desarrollo de dos centros de pruebas: el EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre) en Orkney y el proyecto WAVE HUB en Cornwall. El EMEC lleva en operación varios años y como primer centro de pruebas en cualquier parte del mundo ofrece la oportunidad a los tecnólogos de probar sus prototipos a escala real conectados a red en unas excelentes condiciones de olas y mareas. Al igual que en Europa, en España existen varios proyectos para desarrollar centros tecnológicos de pruebas y homologaciones de los prototipos y equipos en fase de desarrollo: País Vasco: BIMEP (Biscay Marine Energy Platform), infraestructura para investigación, demostración y explotación de sistemas de captación de energía de las olas en mar abierto, que permitirá a los fabricantes de estos sistemas que instalen sus equipos en ellas, realicen pruebas y homologuen prototipos y equipos en fase de desarrollo. La potencia total del centro tecnológico será de 20 MW. Figura 4.4.13.
