Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. La energía de las olas es la energía producida por el movimiento ondulatorio de la superficie del agua del mar. Las olas del mar son un derivado terciario de la energía solar. El calentamiento de la superficie terrestre genera viento y el viento genera olas, por lo tanto, el oleaje es una consecuencia del rozamiento del aire sobre la superficie del mar. La energía de las olas se concentra en las costas y tiene la propiedad característica de desplazarse a grandes distancias sin apenas perder energía. La intensidad del oleaje depende de la intensidad del viento, de su duración y de la longitud sobre la cual se transmite la ola. Se trata de una energía constante y predecible con un impacto en el entorno menor que otro tipo de instalaciones. A nivel mundial, la mayor parte de la energía undimotriz se concentra en los Océanos Atlántico y Pacífico, entre las latitudes 40o y 65o y con un potencial de entre 50-100 kW por metro de frente de ola. Distribución mundial media anual de la energía de las olas en mar abierto (kW/m) Fuente: IH Cantabria La primera patente de energía de las olas se realizó en Francia en 1799, si bien no fue hasta principios de los años 70 del pasado siglo cuando surgieron proyectos financiados por empresas y gobiernos como los de Japón y Reino Unido. Sin embargo, el lento desarrollo de la tecnología y los enormes costes fueron paralizando unos proyectos que han resurgido en los últimos cinco años. Actualmente, entre los mercados en desarrollo, Australia e Inglaterra reúnen todas las condiciones para un crecimiento inminente, beneficiándose de forma primera del desarrollo y la convergencia tecnológica esperada. Países como Australia, Estados Unidos, India, China o Japón están desarrollando diversos sistemas y plantas de producción energéticas. A nivel europeo, Reino Unido, Noruega, Portugal y España son los principales países donde se están desarrollando distintas tecnologías para el aprovechamiento de la energía de las olas. Figura 4.4.6.
