Plan de Energías Renovables 2011- 2020. Alemania, Dinamarca, Austria y, más recientemente, Italia, han conseguido desarrollar en mayor o menor medida el biogás procedente de residuos ganaderos en co-digestión con otros residuos agroindustriales y/o cultivos energéticos. Países como China o India han optado también por el uso del biogás como herramienta de desarrollo rural que permite el acceso a la energía en zonas desfavorecidas. El número de plantas a escala industrial para tratamiento de deyecciones ganaderas en China es de aproximadamente 2.000, con una producción anual de 90 millones de m3, teniendo en 2005 además alrededor de 17 millones de digestores “caseros”, con una producción de más de 6.500 millones de m3. La inclusión en los mecanismos de desarrollo limpio del Protocolo de Kioto de proyectos relacionados con el biogás, tanto con la desgasificación de vertederos como con el procedente de digestores anaerobios, puede facilitar el acceso al gran potencial existente. El biogás de vertedero contribuía con un 36,1% del total, seguido por las plantas depuradoras (tanto urbanas como industriales) con un 11,9%, quedando el 52,0% restante para plantas que tratan deyecciones ganaderas y residuos agroindustriales y la fracción orgánica de residuos domésticos y similares.
