En términos exclusivamente de producción, la Unión Europea, con casi 9 millones de toneladas, supera ampliamente el resultado de Estados Unidos en 2010 (algo más de 1 millón de toneladas). Brasil y Argentina en América Latina, e Indonesia y Malasia en Asia completan el dibujo de la distribución geográfica mundial de los principales actores de este mercado. Todo ese volumen de producción responde a la definición de biodiésel, si bien, de forma análoga a lo que ocurre con el gasóleo, no en todos los mercados responde a la misma especificación técnica, y así las normas de calidad más relevantes a escala internacional son la europea EN 14214 y la norteamericana ASTM D6751 (ésta, específica para biodiésel en mezclas con gasóleo de hasta el 20% en volumen). Licht Total 16.566 Las materias primas más utilizadas para la producción de biodiésel son el aceite de colza en la Unión Europea, el aceite de soja en Estados Unidos y América Latina, y el aceite de palma en el Sudeste Asiático. Otras materias primas con presencia relevante en algunos mercados nacionales son el aceite vegetal usado (en España o Estados Unidos, por ejemplo), el aceite de girasol (en Europa), el aceite de algodón (en Brasil), las grasas animales (en Estados Unidos o Brasil) o el aceite de coco (en Filipinas). Por lo que respecta a la estructura empresarial del sector a escala internacional, sin duda la principal asociación de empresas la constituye la europea EBB (European Biodiesel Board), que agrupa a 73 socios, que representan el 80% de la producción europea de biodiésel. Entre sus socios se encuentran empresas líderes a escala internacional como la multinacional Novaol, la francesa Diester, ADM, Cargill y todo. La extensión y ampliación de éstos mediante los Reglamentos 443 y 444 de 2011 tampoco resolvió completamente el problema.
