The cooling tower can either be an open or a closed tower. In an open tower, the water to be cooled is open to the atmosphere and is cooled by evaporation. An open cooling tower is probably best isolated from the ground loop with a heat exchanger (Figure 40) to prevent contamination by debris in the cooling tower air stream and corrosion and clogging of the building heat pump units. Typically, closed towers are larger, cost more, and consume more power than open towers of the same cooling capacity.
