Double well open loop systems These are systems with separate supply and discharge wells. These may be required where environmental regulations limit discharge to surface water bodies or drainage fields or where aquifer water level control maybe required (Figure 27). Advantages of open loop systems • Simpler design. • Lower drilling costs than for vertical closed loop systems. • More efficient performance by avoiding heat transfer across pipe wall from ground or water body. • Possible lower installation cost if a supply well already exists for water supply with sufficient surplus production capacity to supply the heat pump system. Disadvantages of open loop systems • Possible restrictions on groundwater and surface water withdrawal and discharge. • Water flow requirements may exceed local water availability. • Supply-side of heat pump heat exchangers may be subject to corrosion, abrasion, scaling, and microbial fouling from the source water. • Main pumps typically require more power than closed loop circulating pumps. • Higher installation cost if a separate injection well is required for water discharge. 5.3.1.2 Closed loop GSHP systems A variety of closed loop configurations have been used and these are discussed below. Horizontal closed loop systems Horizontal closed loop systems employ a loop of pipe with a recirculating pump in the closed loop. The loop configuration is usually either a straight or spiral (slinky) arrangement. Diagrams that follow illustrate the differences.
