4.1.1.5 Opcon AB The Powerbox is a product developed by Opcon for the production of electricity from temperature sources as low as 55°C. A standard Opcon Powerbox (Figure 9) has a capacity of 0.74 MW and can be installed in large industrial plants, power stations or with adaption, onboard larger ships using waste heat as the energy source. The system is based on screw compressor technology. To date there are none of these systems used in geothermal applications. Figure 9 Opcon Powerbox, Åmål, Sweden. 4.2 Kalina cycle power plant This cycle uses heat energy to vaporize a mixture of ammonia and water in a closed circuit to generate electricity. Ammonia water mixtures have the potential to improve the efficiency of the heat to power conversion compared to single component working fluids. This technology is named after its Russian inventor, Dr. Alexander Kalina. The Kalina cycle process is shown in Figure 10. Kalina is a newer technology than ORC and the track record on the use of ammonia-water equipment compared with that of iso-butane and pentane fluids remains to be firmly established.
